Pegasus School Celebrates Triple Awards Success

Staff and students at Pegasus School in Caldwell are celebrating their success following a busy 2008. In the 6 months leading up to Christmas, the School not only achieved an overall ‘good’ grade from Ofsted, but it also achieved awards from the British Safety Council and Investors in People.

The School was inspected by Ofsted in November. In the report that followed the school was described as ‘providing a good standard of education’.

The school which provides education and care to children and young people with complex communication and learning difficulties was praised for its ability to adapt the curriculum, teaching methods and activities to meet the wide range and needs of its pupils. This flexibility has ensured that all pupils have progressed well in their learning as well as in their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

The report also acknowledged the high regard that Parent’s, Carers and Placing Authorities’ have of the school.

Hugh Rodger Head Teacher of the School praised his staff and pupils ‘’We work with some of the most complex young people in the country. To have achieved such good inspection reports indicates how hard our staff work and how well our young people are doing.’

In September the School was given its annual audit by the British Safety Council. For the fourth year running the School maintained its 5 star status, the highest achievable score, with a fantastic grade of 96.7%. The Five Star audit reviews all aspects of health and safety, from its management, through to the implementation of associated systems.

In July the School was successfully re-assessed by Investors in People in order to maintain their IIP status. Hugh Rodger Head Teacher commented

‘During the assessment there was a very clear commitment shown by all of the staff interviewed by the Assessor to making the environment one where young people could be given every opportunity to grow and reach their potential and become as independent as possible. It was a privilege to listen to the staff and hear how each one considers how they can add something positive to a young person’s experience whatever their job title and to work   together as a team to share knowledge and experience to continually improve what is on offer to the young people and their families'.
