The final results for the 2008 British Safety Council Five Star Audits are now completed and we are extremely proud to be able to say that we have achieved the top score of 5 stars across the board. Our smaller, community based children’s and adult’s homes were audited for the first time this year and all of them did exceptionally well. Aran Hall School is due for their next audit in February 2009 but is expected to retain its five star status.
At a recent Health and Safety meeting Joy Rice, the BSC Auditor, said she was impressed by the high standards that had been achieved by the Group and the commitment staff had shown to achieving them. She felt that the Group demonstrated two major strengths, staff commitment to the safety of the students which meant they often went well beyond their job description and the Groups recognition of the importance of training.
Martin Bradder, Group Health and Safety Manager commented ‘These scores are a reflection of the hard work carried out by the staff at the sites, in particular the Health and Safety Coordinators. The Coordinators are appointed from all sections of the staff teams including Student Support Assistants, Deputy Head Teachers and Maintenance staff. This cross section of skills ensures a balanced approach that is linked by a common objective’.
The Five Star audit is a unique service provided by the British Safety Council. The audit reviews all aspects of health and safety, from the management of it, through to the implementation of associated systems. The British Safety Council was formed in 1957 and is a registered charity. It is consulted by the Health and Safety Executive and as such has been instrumental in the formulation of UK legislation as it exists today.
