Speech Language and Communication Campaigns for 2011

This year marks the launch of two exciting campaigns linked to Speech, Language and Communication, the Hello Campaign and the Giving Voice Campaign. Students and staff from across the Group will be involved in supporting the campaigns through a number of events, activities and information sharing based on monthly themes.

About the Hello campaign

Hello

Hello, the 2011 national year of communication, is a campaign to increase understanding of how important it is for children and young people to develop good communication skills.

In the 21st century, the ability to communicate - to say what you want to say and to understand what other people are saying - is fundamental.

Hello aims to make communication for all children and young people a priority in homes and schools across the UK so that they can live life to the full.

Hello is being run by The Communication Trust, a coalition of over 35 leading voluntary sector organisations with expertise in speech, language and communication.

The Communication Trust raises awareness of speech, language and communication issues amongst everyone that works with children and young people. The Trust is working in partnership with the Government's Communication Champion, Jean Gross and is backed by the Department for Education and Department of Health.

The National Year - to help all children and young people fulfil their potential through better communication was originally proposed in John Bercow's 2008 Review of Services for Children and Young People 0-19 with Speech, Language and Communication Needs.

About the Giving Voice campaign

Giving a Voice

The Giving Voice campaign is being led by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and has been designed to 'give voice' to people with speech, language and communication needs - to ensure their needs, and those of their carers and families, are met.

Its aim is to demonstrate how speech and language therapy makes a difference to individuals and the broader society across the UK. Giving Voice will help speech and language therapy services demonstrate speech and language therapists' unique value.

January 2011

DON'T TAKE COMMUNICATION FOR GRANTED: Staff training at Alderwasley Hall School

In January the Therapies team at Alderwasley Hall School provided additional communication training to staff. This covered topics such as; the use of social stories, supporting language and vocabulary, using games to develop language, and developing empathy and feeling.

The aim of the training was to highlight the importance of all staff using the same strategies with the young people at the school, to help them develop their speech, language and communication skills to their best ability.

Training also highlighted the value of everyone's contribution to developing speech, language and communication skills. For example the value of playing language games as an evening activity.
