Specialist Support
There are a number of specialist services onsite. These include Speech and Language therapists (6) and Occupational Therapist (3), supported by a team of assistants.
The Therapy team works with Education staff and Carers to deliver a highly integrated service to pupils; centred on the process of interdisciplinary team working. Each pupil has a team of staff dedicated to developing their individual programme; a Speech and Language Therapist and / or an Occupational Therapist will always be part of this team.
The aim of therapy programmes is for pupils to achieve maximum independence in adult life. Emphasis is, therefore, on developing communication, social and functional life skills.
Specialist approaches include TEACCH, Intensive Interaction, Hanen Early Communication Programme, Social Stories, Sensory Integration Therapy and Sensory Diets. A range of Augmentative Communication systems are used, dependent on individual pupil needs; these include PECS, VOCA’s (Voice output communication Aids), sign and symbols.
The team supports pupils through individual sessions, group activities and within class, care and community environments.
A Physiotherapist works at the school, one day per week, providing individual support and programmes for staff teams to follow through.
Behaviour Support
The school has adopted the principles and practice of PROSPECT Training; devised by Jon Hull, an independent Behaviour Consultant. The approach is currently being assessed for registration by BILD.
Jon Hull works one day a week at the school; delivering staff training and providing individual pupil consultation for interdisciplinary teams and parents.
A Forensic Psychologist works two days at the school within both education and residential settings. He provides Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to individuals and small groups of pupils.
The school has good links with the local CAMHS service and a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists visits the school half-termly.
