Duke of Edinburgh Award Achievers’ meet royalty |
In November 2007 students, taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, met up with a member of the Royal family for the third time in the same year.
Bladon House School students were invited, along with students from other schools from the area to meet Prince Edward at Burton Albion Football ground.
During the event they were asked to do a first aid demonstration for the Prince to watch.
Fake blood and gore was applied to the casualties and Prince Edward watched as the students dressed the wounds. He chatted with the students, asking them how they had got the injuries, what level of the award they were doing and where and when they would be doing the expedition section of the award.
The students also got the opportunity to ask him about his experience of the Award.
This was not the first time in the year that students had met with members of the royal family. Back in January 2007, six students taking part in the scheme were invited to go along to Shugborough Hall to meet Prince Edward the Earl of Wessex.
In October 2007 one of our students met the Duke of Edinburgh at St James Palace, having achieved his Gold Level of the Award.
In 2007/2008 there are five students doing the Gold Level Award and 10 students doing the Bronze level award. The Gold group are currently working with two students with special needs from a Derbyshire based mainstream school.
Together they make a really strong team, there is still a lot of work to do but they all seem to be enjoying the challenges that they have faced so far. They have completed the first practice camp in the Dark Peaks. To complete the expedition section of the Award they need to do a further practice camp which again will be in the Dark Peaks and an assessment camp which is planned to take place in Snowdon.
