Students from Bladon House School have travelled to St James Palace in London to be presented with their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award certificates, which were presented by the Duke himself.
The Students completed their Gold Award in July 2008. Their five day
assessment took place in Snowdonia National Park where they walked the equivalent distance of walking to the summit of Snowdon twice. To ensure their safety, the students followed a marked route and were monitored from a safe distance by a member of staff. During the expedition they camped on a different site each night, walking from one site to another over the five days. Some of the sites had no running water and only one had a shower.
June Gibbs who co-ordinates the Duke of Edinburgh Award at the school said;
‘The aim of the award is to challenge each student. This group achievement would have been a challenge to most young people so is an even greater credit to our students. It is truly inspiring to watch the young people overcome their own difficulties to help each other out and work as a real team.’
In 2009 another group of students successfully completed their Gold Award and will be invited to attend the awards ceremony in 2011. In their recent ‘outstanding’ Ofsted education inspection the school was praised for their involvement of the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme which inspectors said supports and enriches the School’s curriculum. |
