Mitchells House Childrens Home
Mitchells House provides 52 week care for up to twelve boys and girls aged 14 to 20 years with learning difficulties and challenging behaviour.
The house is split into three modern, homely and well furnished independent living units. Each unit has its own lounge and kitchen/dining room, and each young person has their own bedroom. All bedrooms are close to bathroom facilities, with two bathrooms on each unit. Our young people are encouraged to personalise their rooms to their own taste. The house also has a safe and secure garden area.
Mitchells House is staffed by an experienced and dedicated team, headed up by the Residential Manager Michelle Widjaew (see profile). The house also has a team of Deputy Managers, Team Leaders, Waking Night staff and Care staff. Each young person has a Keyworker who has specific knowledge of the individual. They provide an effective link between school, home and other services and also advocate on behalf of the young person.
Our young people access education at Bladon House School which is approximately half a mile away from the house. Young people are escorted to and from school.
Our team of experienced care, teaching and therapy staff develop an individualised care and activity plan with the young person and their parents or carers. This takes into consideration their current interests and hobbies, and also identifies new experiences that they may be able to access with our specialist support. The activity plan can be a mix of both solo and group activities. The safety of our young people is paramount and all staff follow our high standard of care and child protection. Risk assessments are carried out for all young people when preparing for trips out into the community.
Mitchells House is situated approximately five minutes walk from Burton town centre, where students, with the support of the care team, can access a wide range of leisure activities, including the leisure centre, cinemas, shops and restaurants. At weekends and school holidays our young people enjoy trips further afield, based on their activity plan, including trips to the seaside, zoo and theme parks.
We encourage family contact and Parents, Carers and Professionals linked to the young person are welcome to visit at any time. Where applicable, we provide support during home visits, including the sharing of successful behaviour strategies.
