The new four bedroomed independent living apartment, named ‘Buzzard’ by the students at the School, opened in February 2009. Two young people have already moved in, with room for two more students. The unit is managed by Dorian Edwards who has been working with young
people at the School for ten years. Dorian has a team of six staff, plus waking night staff.
Work has now begun on the fourth independent living unit based on the school which is due for completion by the end of June 2009.
Both of the refurbishment projects have been fully designed and managed by the Schools Maintenance Team, pictured above, in close liaison with the Principal, Duncan Pritchard and Head of Care, Andy Pryer Smith.
The MaintenanceTeam are led by Brian Harris, Maintenance and Health and Safety Officer. Brian has worked at the School for twelve years and has vast experience in creating practical, robust and safe environments, which also offer a homely environment for the children and young people.
Some of the design features in the apartment include:
- Bathrooms are completely sealed with whiterock walls to allow for easy cleaning and hygiene.
- All rooms are fitted with individual
- thermostats for staff and young people to regulate temperatures.
- All the units are RCD protected as recommended by the 5 star British Safety Council Audit.
- All wiring is hidden behind partition walls and electrical outlets and switches are polycarbonate and able to withstand the impact of a hammer.
- Shower heads and other plumbing have been design to be flush with ceilings to prevent damage.
- Walls have been lined to protect them from impact and ensure furnishings can be secured safely to them.
