Developing Life Skills for Adulthood

Callow Park College delivers specialist, high quality educational provision and care for young people aged 16 + with Autism, Asperger's Syndrome and Specific Language Disorders, all of whom experience complex speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).

All aspects of our curriculum is focused on preparing students for adult life by developing the skills, knowledge and understanding which they need in order to choose, set and achieve their personal goals. These goals may include academic aspirations, vocational or career plans, hopes for independent living, choices of rewarding leisure and recreational pursuits, all underpinned by the ability to form strong social and personal relationships.

To summarise, Callow Park College aims to:

  • meet a students' Speech, Language and Communication Needs
  • meet a students' Special Educational Needs
  • increase an students' independence
  • increase an students' personal and social skills
  • promote transition to local college or work based opportunities
  • promote self empowerment in students' so that they learn to make reasoned, positive life choices

We achieve these aims by addressing the individual needs of every student through the delivery of:

  • speech and language therapy programmes
  • occupational therapy programmes
  • nationally recognised academic and vocational educational programmes
  • high quality care provision.

Our core curriculum framework consists of Core Curriculum subjects with defined Pathways and credits, giving students flexibility in their choices, opportunities to improve on grades, new subjects choices and new vocational experiences.

Our Skills for Adult Life and Enrichment Programmes are a key part of all learning experiences which make up the curriculum. Through them we encourage the development of each student's personal identity, personal confidence and the social and communication skills, which will enable students to progress in their life choices when they leave us. As part of our Enrichment programme, Work Experience Placements give student's the chance to participate in activities which complement their academic and vocational options and which extend their interests and life experiences. Residential students can also take advantage of our Extended Curriculum activities that take place in the evenings, at weekends and during college holidays. These are underpinned by the principles of the Skills for Adult Life curriculum and joint planning by Residential staff, Teachers and Therapists over the year ensures that the activity programme has a holistic approach with the student at its centre.

Students have the opportunity to access courses at local colleges and schools which means that we are able to meet the academic and vocational aspirations of all student's, even when their aspirations need staffing expertise and physical resources which are not available at Callow Park College itself. These placements also play a significant part of our Community Cohesion policy, as they take student's into the wider community and extend their opportunities to develop their communication and social skills in a large organisation, whilst having access to the specialist therapy support at Callow Park, essential to make such an opportunity a success.

Callow Park College is unique in the breadth and depth of its Therapy provision. Our large team of Speech and Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists ensure that the needs of every student are assessed regularly, that strategies are developed to address those needs, that appropriate delivery mechanisms are put in place and that continual monitoring leads to continual adjustments. This work is carried out in partnership with the student, college staff, parents/carers and associated professionals.

The overall ethos of all the colleges' residential facilities is to create a relaxing environment where students feel safe and supported. There are two residential houses on the same site as the college; these are called Babington House and Devonshire House. There is also Cavendish House which is located in the town of Matlock, a few miles away from the college. Students are placed in the house relevant to their age and/or development and peer compatibility after careful assessment.
