Trip of a Lifetime

Young people from Alderwasley Hall School and Callow Park College have recently returned from their third successful skiing trip to Italy.

The trip, which was organised by staff at Alderwasley Hall School, was run by an organisation called 'Interski' who cater for ski trips for schools and colleges, as well as family holidays. The skiing party consisted of thirteen students from a range of year groups including key stage 3, 4 and 16 plus.

The resort of Pila in the Aosta Valley, proved excellent for beginners, with an area in the resort named ‘baby Pila’ which allowed students new to skiing a safe place to learn the basic manoeuvres.

Within the party there was also an intermediate group, but by the end of the week every member of the beginners group could ski down red runs!

The Intermediate group were able to comfortably cope with red runs, covering large distances in small amounts of time. By the middle of the week they had achieved the ultimate goal which was to reach the highest mountain ridges called ‘Couis 1’ and ‘Couis 2’ and ski down them with confidence.

As well as having six days skiing, the hotel provided entertainment every evening. This included ten pin bowling, dining out at an Italian restaurant, an evening’s trip to a night club with students from other schools, Bum boarding, and a presentation night which was run by our ski instructors during which they told stories about the week, graded students ski abilities and presented them with certificates and badges.

Chris Ollett, who is a teacher at the school and led this year’s trip said

The trip is not just about the skiing. The personal achievements the students make during the week are a real boost to their self esteem and confidence.’

The young people also have the opportunity to develop their social skills, through sharing accommodation with peers, students from other sites and other schools. Skiing itself is excellent for improving co-ordination, balance and endurance; but also encourages socialisation and gives students experience of how to adapt to and cope in different environments and situations.
